POSITION SUMMARY: 

The Photographer II helps maintain and develop Q’s world-class collection of bicycle, parts & accessories photography — from studio shots of small enthusiast parts to location-based commercial work, performing roughly 35% product photography in studio and 65% lifestyle photography inside and outside. This position will have the opportunity to work on our whole portfolio of popular in-house brands including Salsa, Surly and All-City. The Photographer II conceptualizes, captures, creates, and prepares photographic images to display in a variety of published mediums. This position selects and assembles equipment according to subject material, anticipated conditions, and has good knowledge of the function of various types of cameras, lenses, lighting equipment, and accessories. The Photographer II will ensure strict brand standards and photography guidelines are applied and met, as well as channel their creative talent to help enhance the creative direction. From a day in the backcountry shooting fast-paced action to an afternoon in-studio exploring lighting techniques, this job has a lot of variety and unlimited potential. The Photographer II will also serve as a resource and provide guidance to Photographer I. 

WHAT YOU WILL BE ACCOUNTABLE FOR: 

  • Pre‑Production Planning & Logistics (10%) 
    • Conduct location scouting and work in varied weather/terrain, prepping equipment on the fly.
    • Follow the photo style guide and shot list consistently and thoroughly.
    • Decide/recommend the best angle, lens, sequencing, framing, and lighting to match project needs.
  • Creative Execution (On‑Set Shooting) 50%
    • Capture subjects in mixed environments (indoor/outdoor, products/people) for commercial‑quality content.
    • Capture action or movement at high speeds and keep it in focus.
    • Determine the right moment to shoot, skillfully balancing mixed, strobe, reflected, and natural light.
    • Some video capture, either in-studio on tripod or external short-form hand-held capture may be needed from time to time.
  • Post‑Production & Image Quality (25%)
    • Process photos to achieve the color, tone, and overall quality outlined by the Art Director.
  • Asset Management & Workflow Governance (10%)
    • Follow procedures for proper file preparation and organization (naming conventions, metadata, file integrity).
    • Practice safe file management and server backups.
    • Where processes are undefined, collaborate to create and document new guidelines.
  • Collaboration, Direction & Mentorship (5%)
    • Direct models and work closely with Art Directors to bring their vision to life.
    • Provide guidance to Photographer I on equipment choices, lighting techniques, and action photography.
  • Other tasks and responsibilities as assigned 

This position reports to the Marketing Operations Manager who reports to the Vice President of Marketing. 

WHAT YOU NEED TO SUCCEED: 

  • REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS 
    • Minimum 4 years photography experience both in-studio and on-location.
    • Knowledge of use of strobe, continuous, reflected, and natural light sources to enhance the subject’s appearance
    • Proficient in Adobe Creative Suite; highly skilled in Photoshop & Lightroom.   
    • Ability to produce professional-quality images, including action/movement at high speeds in focus, that are consistent with brand standards.
    • Basic understanding of video capture, camera functions, and video files/formats to use when shooting video content for post-production
    • Knowledge of photo style trends.
    • Ability to take initiative and work effectively without close supervision
    • Ability to work both in a team framework and by one’s self for long periods
    • Ability to work under pressure of deadlines and changing priorities.
    • Flexible and adaptable.
    • Works well with others.
  • PREFERRED QUALIFICATONS
    • Degree in photography or fine art.
    • Drone license and/or experience using a drone to create engaging video shots
  • OTHER RELATED CRITERIA:
    • Domestic Travel
      • Ability to travel domestically 6 or more times a year which includes flying by plane and driving a motor vehicle. Must possess a valid US driver’s license and fulfill the requirements of being a Q Approved Driver. 
    • Physical Requirements
      • Ability to ride a bike loaded with equipment to various photo locations
      • Ability to lift and carry equipment on location up to 50 lbs, frequently lifting up to 30lbs
      • Ability to move large studio equipment and props.
      • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
      • Ability to frequently bend, stop, crouch, reach, balance, climb, and grasp.
      • Ability to work outside in various weather conditions.
